I may have been a bit ambitious. I can't quite remember eleven years later why I thought to myself, "Sure! I can make a wedding cake! No problem!" Forget that at that point I could count the number of times I'd made a cake from scratch on one hand. Forget that at that point I'd never actually iced a cake. details....details....

Thankfully, my sister is amazing and understanding and a true artist- willing to take a chance on the creative process. Thankfully, my brother-in-law, truly my brother from another mother, was willing to trust my sister. Thankfully, my Mama is supportive and wonderful- willing to turn over her tiny kitchen (and dining room) despite the fact that she was preparing the rest of the amazing spread for my sister's wedding, and willing to ferry me to specialty stores to gather pans, supplies, etc.

With more than a fair amount of cursing and sweating and doubting and luck, in the midst of the wedding day circus, I managed to pull it offer. In the end, my great-grandmother's "Itation (Italian) Cream Cake," amaretto buttercream, Wilton fondant, and push-molded marzipan acorns came through in the clinch.

Today, a million thank you's to my family for giving me a great opportunity and for suspending disbelief long enough for me to muddle through.
